The Challenge

Mathematics (pure, applied, probability and statistics) provides powerful tools to help us better understand and improve our world.

The novel application of these tools in different fields often leading to exciting breakthroughs. Our team works to promote understanding, development, and application of mathematical tools in interdisciplinary research nationally and internationally.

The Approach

We use a diverse range of mathematical techniques and areas to create and study models of real-world problems and phenomena from many different fields.

These techniques include applied topology, asymptotic methods, numerical simulations and statistical and stochastic modelling.

Aims

To use mathematics to make sense of the world around us through a wide range of pure and applied research
To disseminate our mathematics research through high-impact publications and inspiring public engagement

Projects

Fluid mechanics

Air, water, and anything that flows is mathematically a fluid. Our research uses mathematical models to shed insight on the underlying physical processes that govern the flows all around us.

Mathematical Biology

Mathematical biology explores topics like predator-prey dynamics, blood flow in the body, bacterial motion, and viral epidemiology, using tools from differential equations and nonlinear systems to understand these complex systems.

Financial Mathematics and Statistics

Financial Mathematics and Statistics spans a wide variety of applications in business and finance including cryptocurrency bubbles and FinTech, applied options pricing, sports modelling, industrial modelling, and electoral statistics.

Environmental and industrial mathematics

Mathematical modelling is key in improving environmental sustainability and industrial efficiency. We actively try to engage with industry and have worked on problems like carbon capture, frictional wear and fretting.

Public engagement

We are passionate about sharing mathematics with school students, teachers and the general public through our annual Royal Institution Mathematics Masterclasses, Year 12 Masterclasses, on-campus enrichment events and school visits.
